Todo.txt for Chrome – due date and threshold date text improvements

Accept weekday names for dates in task text

Todo.txt for Chrome now accepts weekday names as input when used with ‘due:‘ or ‘t:‘ in task text.

The extension parses the day name, and replaces it with date representation. The date chosen is always in the future: creating a task with ‘due:Wednesday‘ on Thursday, will set due date to next Wednesday.

The accepted strings for both due-date and threshold-date are: today, tomorrow, yesterday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday andsunday.

Prompt accepted day strings for dates in task text

The extension now suggests accepted date strings when ‘due:‘ or ‘t:‘ are typed in the task text. The suggested dates are the same as accepted strings listed above.

Bug fixes

  • Edited tasks were written at end of file. Now they are edited in place. New tasks and restored tasks are placed at end of file.
  • If task due date was already in future, setting due date to next week did not work. Fixed.
  • Task count on extension badge changed only after sync was complete. Fixed.

That’s all for now.

As usual, please share any bugs, or new feature suggestions that you come across.

Cheers!

Todo.txt for Chrome – UI tweaks: Smaller header bar, wider search

Compact header bar

Increased space for the task list by making the header bar more compact.

Signed in user name and the log out link – both infrequently used – are now available in the sidebar instead of at top of the app. The syncing indicator (#2 in the screenshot below) now appears in the footer when active.

1 - Name of filter, if current filter text is in saved filters, 2 - Sync indicator moved out of the way
1 – Name of filter, if current filter text is in saved filters, 2 – Sync indicator moved out of the way

The filter field is now wider, and a consumes all available free space in the header. This allows for longer filters to be fully available.

If the current filter text is saved in the sidebar, the name of the filter appears before the filter text (#1 above).

Finally, traversing the task list with keyboard up/down now also focuses on the filter search. Pressing down key when on the last task, or up key from the first task goes to filter input. Pressing down in the filter moves focus to the first task, pressing up focuses the last task.

Other updates

  1. Dates entered in the due date and completion date fields are verified before accepting. A warning message is shown if the date is invalid.
  2. Bug fix: Completion date field was not shown at times when editing a completed task

That’s all for now.

As usual, please share any bugs, or new feature suggestions that you come across.

Cheers!

autoConvert Select – Reading common currency symbols based on website domain

Some common currency symbols are used by more than one currency. The dollar sign ($) is the most common example – used by the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Colombia, and more.

autoConvert will convert values with these common currency symbols based on domain of the website where the value is selected. Domain matching is only used for currency symbols, and not for the three character currency codes.

An example:

AUD 20‘ will always be read as Australian Dollars irrespective of the website,
$ 20‘ will only be read as Australian Dollars on websites ending in ‘.au‘. Elsewhere it will be read as US Dollars.

The currency symbols covered by domain-matching are:

  1. $
    • US Dollar (default)
    • Canadian Dollar (.ca)
    • Australian Dollar (.au)
    • New Zealand Dollar (.nz)
    • Colombian Peso (.co)
    • Argentinian Peso (.ar)
    • Chilean Peso (.cl)
    • Dominican Peso (.do)
    • Jamaican Dollar (.jm)
    • Brazilian Real (.br)
  2. £
    • British Pound (default)
    • Egyptian Pound (.eg)
  3. ¥
    • Japanese Yen (default)
    • Chinese Renminbi Yuan (.cn)
  4. kr
    • Swedish Krona (default)
    • Norwegian Krone (.no)
    • Danish Krone (.dk, .fo)
    • Icelandic Krone (.is)
  5. Rs
    • Sri Lankan Rupee (default)
    • Pakistani Rupee (.pk)

The top-level-domain (TLD) next to each currency above indicates which websites will use that currency for the relevant symbol. When the domain does not match that TLD, the default currency will be used.

That’s all, folks!

autoConvert Select – currency conversion free trial, and more

Switching currency to USD
Switching currency to USD

A free trial of Currency conversion is now available to all users

Currency conversion is a premium feature, but is now available as a free trial to all users. It shall stay free for at least 30 days for everyone.

One-time conversion to other currency or time-zone

autoConvert converts currencies to your default currency (you may change this on the options page), and time to your local time zone (from browser).

For those times when you may want to convert to another currency, there are now two extra buttons available in the popup:

Use them to change currency, or time zone, for the current conversion.

The currency and time zone specified here is only used for the current conversion in the popup. When the popup is closed and opened again, it goes back to converting to the default currency, and the home time zone. Conversion by selection on a web page always uses the default currency and home time zone.

This is a premium feature, but is available to all users during the free trial.

Conversions appear in original order

Conversions appear in original order – both on web pages, and in the popup.

Earlier, they were ordered as time conversions, followed by currency conversions, followed by unit conversions. This forced sort order has now been removed.

Irrespective of the type of conversion – time, currency or unit – they will appear in the same order as in the text selected/typed.

Other minor updates

  • tbs‘ is now parsed as ‘tablespoons
  • Removed permission for reading clipboard contents
  • Minor bug fixes

That’s all, folks!

autoConvert Select – pounds, stones and currency conversion trial

lbst-1
I’m over 10Kg above target weight 😥

Two changes in this update – a minor tweak for pound/stone-using users, and announcing first currency conversion trial.

Convert mass to both stones and pounds

Some countries measure weight in pounds, others prefer stones. In the old extension there was a setting to decide which unit to use. In autoConvert Select, both values are now shown. Simple.

Currency conversion trial

Currency conversion is now available in autoConvert select. However, it’s currently in trial mode, and available only to a small (randomly selected) fraction of users.

I am not very comfortable about the durability of the exchange rates source I am using. So, I have restricted this feature to a small number of users. Exchange rates are also fetched only twice a day.

When currency conversion is available, an option to enable it, and to select your home currency will be available in options.

That’s all, folks!

Please share your feedback, including suggestions and any bugs you find using this link.

autoConvert Select – Convert any text with extension window

v. 2018.911.0.11

Convert text from other apps using autoConvert Select

Copy the text in the other app (say, from an email in Outlook), click on the autoConvert Select button in Chrome, and paste the text in the text box. autoConvert will instantly convert all units and times found in the text.

Convert more than 6 items from a web page

Convert as many units as you want in one go
Convert as many units as you want in one go

The limit of 6 conversions at a time does not apply to conversions done using the autoConvert Select window. Copy all the text from a webpage and paste into the text box. All conversions found in the text will be displayed1

Offline conversions of units and times

Google provides a handy converter for units and time zones. autoConvert Select makes it one better by providing similar functionality even without an internet connection. Like before, open Chrome, open the autoConvert Select window, and type in whatever you want coverted. It’s done, pronto.

Other updates

Updated icon - autoConvert Select

autoConvert Select – v 2018.907.0.9

Convert time zones with dates

AutoConvert Select reads the dates provided with times when converting time zones. As usual, just select the date and time with the time zone, and the conversion appears. When the extension is unable to parse the date, the time zone is converted assuming today’s date.

The date formats currently parsed are:

  • YYYY-MM-DD‘ (e.g. 2018-09-23, 2018.09.23, 2018/09/23)
  • DD-MM-YYYY‘ (e.g. 23-09-2018, 23.09.2018, 23/09/2018)
  • DD-MMM-YYYY‘ (e.g. 23 Sep 2018, 23 September 2018)
  • DD-MMM-YY‘ (e.g. 23 Sep 18, 23 September 18)
  • DD-MMM‘ (e.g. 23 Sep, 23 September) – in this case the current year is assumed

Some minor variations are also parsed, e.g.: ‘23rd September 2018

Other updates

  • Convert time zone when zone may be in brackets (e.g. ‘5 PM (PDT)‘)
  • Correctly parse full ISO format – ‘Z‘ time zone was not being parsed earlier
  • Correctly handle parsing pace units (e.g.  ‘8:00 min/mile‘) and time zones
  • Enforce text size and font for the conversion box

That’s all, folks!
