Pastel new tab – automatic dark mode

Automatic dark mode

Pastel new tab now supports automatic dark mode. When enabled, the new tab page shows a subdued dark screen in dark mode, and a regular pastel tab in light mode.

System dark mode is supported by Chrome on Mac OS 10.14+ and Windows 10+. Dark mode may also be applied directly (‘Go dark’ button) if your operating system doesn’t support system-wide dark mode.

Add custom colours

Add your favourite colours to the new tab page. Use the ‘Set custom colour (+)’ button to add a new colour. The selected colour is saved to grid of all colours, and set as current pinned colour.

Top site icons

Pastel new tab now shows site icons along with titles when top sites are enabled.

This change requires additional permission to access site icons, so may require you to re-enable the extension.

Todo.txt for Chrome – System dark theme, compact list, sync bug fixes

Follow system theme – dark or light

When system theme is selected, the task list will use dark or light theme based on current system theme. This feature depends on Chrome and the operating system support. At the moment, it appears to be only available in MacOS.

Select ‘Follow system theme’ in settings, or use the keyboard shortcut (‘v + s‘) in task list.

Dark theme updates

Dark theme in task list is available to try for everyone. Dark theme can be enabled from settings, using keyboard shortcut (‘v + d‘) in task list, or by using the theme icon in bottom-right corner of task list window.

Dark theme and system theme are supporter features.
They are free to try for all users, but the theme setting is not remembered—the task list will always open in light theme.

Compact list view (beta)

Compact task list is available to try in beta. Switch list density using keyboard shortcuts:
– ‘l + c‘ for compact list
– ‘l + d‘ for default list

List density is a supporter feature.
It is free to try for all users, but the density setting is not remembered—the task list will always open in default density.

New keyboard shortcut: archive tasks

Archive completed tasks from task list using the keyboard shortcut ‘shift + a‘.

This shortcut is disabled by default since it may interfere with the Add Task shortcut (‘a‘). It may be enabled in settings.

Other updates:

  1. Background sync code has been massively redone to reduce sync errors.
  2. When sharing feedback from in-app feedback link, the app version, browser version and OS name are shared. This helps diagnose issues.

Clutter Free – Dark mode in tab search (Supporters only)

If you are like me – dark theme system wide, and brightness and contrast turned low – then you may like this update.

A dark theme is now available in the tab search window. It applies consistently across all three tabs – search, duplicates and actions. The theme may be chosen on the options page, or quickly switched from the actions tab.

The dark theme is only available to supporters.

Other updates

  1. The direct switch indicator marks links that are already open in another tab. The indicator icon now takes a slightly darker shade on lighter pages, and a lighter shade on pages with dark backgrounds.
  2. Links in the footer – feedback, other apps, update notes – are gently highlighted when hovered.
  3. Bug fix – ‘Ignore hash’ setting had stopped working after the last update
  4. Potential bug fix – Updated some code to ensure multiple tab search windows do not open

New: More keyboard shortcuts

Continuing with yesterday’s updates, here are the promised keyboard shortcuts:

  • Switch theme: ‘v‘ followed by ‘d‘ark or ‘l‘ight
  • Switching highlight colours: ‘h‘ followed by
    • ‘g‘ for grey,
    • ‘b‘ for Rebecca purple,
    • ‘v‘ for green,
    • ‘y‘ for yellow, or
    • ‘o‘ for orange

Helper for multi-key keyboard shortcuts

Added helper modals to assist with multi-key keyboard shortcuts – changing task priority (‘p‘ + ‘a..z‘), switching theme (‘v‘ + ‘d/l‘), and switching highlight colours (‘h‘ + ‘g/b/v/y/o‘).

When the the first key is pressed, a small window appears in the bottom right with hints about next key options available.

This also helps prevent unknowingly changing priority by indicating priority changing mode is on.

Todo.txt for Chrome – New dark theme

New: A dark theme (trial)

A theme for the coming dark winter months (except for the lucky ones down under). It works with all the in-built highlight colours, and on all app screens. Switch between the themes from the options page. I will soon also provide a keyboard shortcut for switching themes.

(A few more screen shots are shared near the bottom of this post)

Note: The dark theme is available to everyone at the moment. However, I plan to turn the dark theme, and some new planned features, into paid upgrades.
All the functionality already in the app will stay free, including any core updates added in the future.

Other updates

  • Tweaked the appearance of side drawer, including sliding it in and out
  • Removed extra highlighting from the checkboxes and edit & delete links
  • Small bug fixes

There are again a lot of changes in this version. This may mean that a few bugs may have escaped my testing. Please do share any bugs, or feature glitches that you come across.

Word Counter – Trigger key, light theme, and more

A couple of new additions in this update, along with the usual minor changes and bug fixes

Trigger key for counting only on command

First up: Word Counter now provides an option to only count selected text when a trigger key is pressed. This key may be enabled in the extension options (disabled by default)

Trigger keys may be any of: ‘alt‘, ‘shift‘, ‘control‘(not on MacOS), and ‘Command‘ (on MacOS only).

Next: Word count box can be themed in a dark (default) or light theme. Change in extension options.

Others

Finally, some minor updates and fixes:

  • Added link to update notes (i.e. this website) in options
  • Fixed: Don’t count words when right-clicking on a link
  • Fixed: Consistent text size and font for word count box on all webpages

Dark and light theme for conversion box

Conversion box may be themed in a lighter or darker shade. Change in extension options.

The conversion box’s position may also be changed in options.
